Election season can feel like a whirlwind—constant news updates, debates, and social media chatter can leave anyone feeling overwhelmed. Navigating daily life while Election Day falls on a Tuesday can also make it particularly difficult to keep one's peace of mind.
Here are some tips to surviving election season and keeping your mental health a priority from a therapist:
Limit Media Consumption: Being constantly inundated with updates on who is up in the polls can be exhausting. Try setting a schedule for when you check the news like once in the morning and once at night or just once on your lunch break
Set boundaries for political discussions. This doesn’t have to be a rigid “no political conversations” rule but allowing yourself to say “no” to certain conversations
Focus on what you can control: Sometimes all you can control is whether you get out and vote. Use your voice to get to the polls
Create a self-care kit. Whether you like curling up with a cup of tea or throwing on a pair of fuzzy socks, this can be helpful for signaling to our bodies that it’s ok to rest! Pick your favorite comfort item and make a plan!
Plan a post election unwind. This doesn’t have to be an extravagant event. If a post dinner walk with no cell phone is what you need, give yourself permission to enjoy
Remember to seek connection with your community. You deserve to have a space held for you too while navigating all the thoughts and emotions throughout the day, as well as the days to follow. If support is complex right now, consider taking the first step to talking to a supportive, nonjudgmental therapist.
